Lotto: 240
Descrizione: MORI SOSEN (1747 - 1821): A MONKEY Indian ink and paint on silk. Japan, 19th century. TOTAL SIZE 143.7 x 37.5 CM, IMAGE 20.7 x 17.2 CM Monkey picture from the presumably most famous “monkey painter” in history. The monkey is sitting on its bottom and has a paw in front of its nose. Perhaps it has picked a flea out of its fur and is now eating it with satisfaction. Sparingly painted around the monkey so that the animal is really the focal point and is therewith truly effective. The monkey (saru) is one of the zodiac signs, therefore there are a lot of people who are born “monkeys”. In the signature there is a “So”, a different and not so frequently used sign for monkey. See the note in No. 222. The signature is SOSEN with two red seals. Small, well-preserved painting, tastefully mounted with gold surface and brocade strips. Wooden, beautifully polished rollers. From a private collection in Klosterneuburg

Descrizione: MORI SOSEN (1747 - 1821):MONKEY MOTHER WITH BABY Indian ink and paint on silk. Japan, 19th century. TOTAL SIZE 143 x 37.7 CM, IMAGE 20.6 x 17.3 CM The strict mother monkey is sitting on grass and is holding its baby in its paws. The baby looks very much as if it would like to leave its mother and cause mischief. This small painting which also features animals and leaves the surroundings only implied or completely out, proves the painter’s mastery particularly in the portrayal of faces! Sosen the monkeys into natural personalities with fine esprit and intense liveliness. No one can match Sosen’s ability in this regard. The signature is SO-SEN with two red seals. Small, well-preserved painting, tastefully mounted with gold surface and brocade strips with floral print. Wooden, ribbed rollers. Also see the note in No. 222. From a private collection in Klosterneuburg

Lotto: 242
Descrizione: MORI SOSEN (1747 - 1821):MONKEY AND SPARROW Indian ink and paint on silk. Japan, 19th century. TOTAL SIZE 138 x 37.5 CM, IMAGE 20.5 x 17 CM The monkey with a red face and a stub tail is masterfully captured, not only in its movement, but particularly in its facial expression and its fur! It is obvious that the monkey wanted to catch the suzume (sparrow), but it was faster and volatilized into the sky. Possibly the monkey stumbled, that appears to be the case because he is lying on the ground. On the other hand it has its front paws positioned one on top of the other, that means that it admires the bird because it would also like to be able to fly like the bird. The sparrow is depicted perfectly en detail. The monkey is spirited albeit in a subtly caricature-like manner! The painting is in very good condition and optimally mounted with gold surfaces and brocade strips. Wooden, beautifully polished rollers. The signature is SOSEN with two small red seals. Sosen changed, in love with the painting of monkeys, and perhaps somewhat self derisively, his name Sosen 祖仙 (literally “immortal ancestor”) to Sosen 狙仙 (literally “immortal monkey”). The “Sen” 仙 in the name is the same sign as in the famous “Sennin” 仙人, the immortal hermits in the mountains... From a private collection in Klosterneuburg
