Descrizione: FOUR PART SCREEN WITH ANIMALS Indian ink and paint on silk. Korea, Choson, 19th century. TOTAL SIZE 181.7 x 175.5 CM, EACH PAINTING 125.5 x 33.5 CM All four paintings are brocade-mounted and are the same size. Starting from the left, there are chickens, herons, cranes and dogs. The rooster and hen stand in front of green bamboo and a high cliff which slants upward. Rooster, hen, bamboo, cliff, etc. symbolize the joys of country life. The white heron – symbol of longevity – in front of the lotus symbolizes purity. The heron is standing on one leg in the water, alongside the lotus with large leaves reeds with white blossoms are growing. The most effective and symbolically strongest image is the third one from the left. The pine tree is immense and weaves its way from the bottom to the top of the picture. Two red crowned cranes are standing on the stem; both – the pine tree and the crane – are proven symbols of longevity. The short inscription “Old pine trees – slender cranes” (songlao heshou 松老鸖瘦) makes reference to this. The image on the far right portrays two spotted dogs under a wutong tree behind which a full moon is shining. All images (with the exception of that with the herons) have longer inscriptions written in calligraphy. Poems. Good condition. From an Austrian private collection
